The Secure Digital (SD) standard was established by the SD Association (SDA). As early as 1999, SD memory cards gained popularity due to their small size, fast speed, hot-swappable capability, and backward compatibility with MMC (Multi-Media Card), making them the preferred portable semiconductor storage devices for digital cameras, smartphones, and camcorders. With the advent of the Internet of Things era, the hot-swappable data copying method gradually gave way to more secure and stable wireless data transfer methods, leading to the emergence of surface-mounted SD NAND.

I. Application Background

With the rise of the Internet of Things, terminal products are becoming increasingly miniaturized, and there is a growing demand for smaller component sizes. Consumer electronics, which have large market volumes, are also facing increasing cost pressures. To meet the requirements of small size, high capacity, low cost, and high stability, XTX has been the first to introduce an SD NAND product with an LGA8 8x6mm package based on SLC NAND that complies with the SD 2.0 standard.

II. XTX SD NAND Products and Features

High reliability. XTX uses stable and reliable SLC (Single Level Cell) NAND as its foundation, equipped with a high-speed SD NAND controller, achieving a read speed of up to 50MHz. The SLC NAND architecture, which stores one bit of data per cell, ensures stable and reliable data storage and supports up to 100,000 erase/write cycles. Strict reliability design and validation ensure stable operation of the product within the temperature range of -30°C to 85°C.

Multiple capacity options. XTX offers multiple capacity choices, including 1Gbit, 2Gbit, 4Gbit, and 8Gbit for 3V, allowing customers to flexibly select suitable capacities without changing hardware designs, effectively controlling costs.

Strong compatibility. After over 20 years of development, SD has become the preferred portable semiconductor storage solution for embedded systems. SD NAND is compatible with the SD 2.0 standard and has received more than 20 platform certifications and reference design recommendations.

Small size and stable soldering. Compared to card-based storage solutions that require hot-swappable slots, the LGA8 6x8mm package significantly saves PCB board area and reduces mechanical slot costs, making the final product smaller and more aesthetically pleasing. Direct soldering to the PCB board enhances data reading reliability and eliminates the usage limitations associated with slot insertion and removal.

III.Xcore offers high-quality design services.

Before modifying the hardware compatibility design, XTX created a test board to convert Micro SD to LGA8 packaging, making it easy for customers to evaluate and test. When soldered to the adapter board, it can be used as a Micro SD card, as shown in the following figure:
